WHAT IT IS
Introduced in 2001 by Schuyler Grant, New York City-based Kula Yoga is an uplifting fusion of yoga that blends breath-based Vinyasa-style flow with Ashtanga and Iyengar. Grant is also the co-creator of Wanderlust yoga festivals.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Kula Yoga will lengthen and strengthen your body from the outside in, and inside out. Heat-generating flows will get you sweating, allowing your muscles and connective tissues to release and expand, enhancing flexibility and keeping you present and focused in a moving meditation. Some classes may be more flowing asana-centric, while others include Yin Yoga or other therapeutic elements, but precision of alignment and an emphasis on pranayama is always included. Teachers undergo Kula-specific trainings and are held to rigorous standards specific to the Kula method.
BENEFITS
Yoginis practicing Kula Yoga often speak to the delicious addictiveness of Kula Yoga as a regular practice, as it easily stimulates a yoga “buzz” that’ll leave you rejuvenated, and craving your next time on the mat. You’ll find new nuances to familiar asanas while enjoying an invigorating and comprehensive practice that envelopes body, mind and spirit.
